The Church

History/Lore

One of the more universally recognized deities, Selenisstra has adherents in most known societies, and shrines and temples to her name are found throughout the world. She is worshipped by many spellcasters, sages, inventors, artists, and nocturnal entities; both those that need some measure of light and those who thrive in total darkness, since she represents both darkness and the pale moonlight that pierces it.

Temples to Selenisstra are widely varied, and many are focused on one or two fields of her domain; magic and the moon are two of the most common ones, found in or near institutions of learning and magic, and in outdoor locations, respectively. Temples focusing on her creative and invention aspects are often visited by artists, inventors, engineers, and the like, seeking inspiration for their creative endeavors.

The vast majority of Selenisstra’s clergy, especially in the upper ranks, are female, despite there being no explicit prohibition or discouragement of male priests. Formal clergy titles, in descending order, include Tetoracu Thall Atulinae, Xun Tetoracu Atulinae, Zov Tetoracu Atulinae. Clergy in general are known as Atulinae, or Atulinaeus if plural.

Dogma

Selenisstra’s clergy follow a cyclical attitude, much like their goddess; cycles of the moon, cycles of discovery and revelation followed by concealment and secrets. To the faithful of Selenisstra, the destruction of knowledge or magic is anathema. If magic or knowledge imperils you, it should be hidden, secreted away, but never destroyed under any circumstances.

The constant flow of time brings cycles which ebb and flow; knowledge is meant to be discovered, used, flourish in creativity, and be lost again so it can once more be discovered. Followers are encouraged to choose for themselves whether knowledge should be hoarded and secreted away or disseminated and spread far and wide.

Selenisstra’s ethos is also one of complete acceptance and tolerance of any, no matter their nature, who seek to expand or preserve magic or knowledge. All are welcome in the church so long as they follow these ideals and show some form of creativity or magical ability.

Day-to-Day Activities

Clergy of Selenisstra are widely varied; the hierarchy of the church is not strict, and in many temples and orders, the individual clergy set their own agendas as far as their activity. In others, the activities are directed from higher-ranking priestesses. All clergy are tasked with preserving magic and knowledge whenever it is in danger of destruction, but whether it is preserved by hiding it away or by revelation is left up to the specific order, or individual priestess.

Some travel the world and encourage creativity and creation of new things and are popular among artists and illusionists as well as inventors. Yet others focus on the nocturnal aspects of Selenisstra; the clergy encourages aid to people suffering problems related to the night or darkness, to dispel peoples’ fear and uneasiness of nighttime.

Those seeking to hide things often find allies in the clergy of Selenisstra as well; regardless of what is meant to be concealed, priestesses of Selenisstra are bound to not reveal secrets entrusted to them by the faithful. They may choose not to help (though helping is encouraged unless there is a very good reason not to) but are bound to not reveal the secret regardless. However, is not commonly known that this only applies to genuinely faithful worshippers of Selenisstra, and those who do not truly honor the Maiden of Secrets do not bind the clergy to keep their confidence.

Priestly Vestments

The most commonly-used colors used by the clergy of Selenisstra, and her worshipers are Black and pearlescent white, and both moonstones and obsidian are extensively used in their jewelry, usually depending on the wearer’s skin tone; those with fair skin use obsidian, those with darker skin tend to use moonstones.

The most common ceremonial garb is a black vest-like robe, partly opened in front, with pearlescent white lining along the edges, much like Selenisstra’s appearance is generally depicted. Priestesses with either black or silvery hair let it flow freely; those with other shades generally have their heads covered in a hood with a decorative horned head-clasp.

Adventuring Garb

Practical clothing is favored, but usually has moonstone-based adornments. Many priestesses wear heavy armor, polished black with shiny silver trim (moonstone being too fragile for use on armor).
